Your Emergency Room Visit

We hope you never need emergency medical care. But if you do, North Cypress Emergency Room is here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

STEP 1: First Look/Triage Nurse
At North Cypress, treatment begins as soon as the patient arrives at the Emergency Room (ER). Patients are first seen by an emergency nurse we call the “First Look Nurse.” The First Look Nurse interviews each patient and assesses the severity of their condition. Patients with the most serious conditions will be seen first. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this process. We recommend that patients do not eat or drink before being seen by the ER doctor as tests or procedures may be ordered that require fasting beforehand. If you or a family member’s symptoms change or worsen during your wait, please notify the First Look Nurse.

STEP 2: Registration
Registration is completed during the patient's stay and before leaving the ER. Be assured that care will not be delayed to collect registration information.

STEP 3: Treatment

Patients are seen as soon as possible in an exam room. The hospital has a Fast Track area that treats minor illnesses or injuries. An ER nurse will reassess your condition, ask questions and discuss any possible tests that the patient may require. We encourage patients and family members to ask any questions they may have. An ER physician will also examine you and may order a variety of tests that need to be completed to correctly diagnose and treat your concern. The ER has a specialized team that works under the guidance of a physician to provide treatment. Team members may include:

  • Registered Nurse
  • Respiratory Therapist
  • Physician Assistant
  • Case Manager
  • Registered Nurse Practitioner
  • Medical or Radiology Technician

Treatment at home or by your primary care physician may be suggested by one of our team members.

STEP 4: Re-Evaluation/Admission

Once all tests, treatments and procedures are completed, the ER physician will determine if the patient will be discharged or admitted to the hospital. As the admission has not been pre-arranged, it may take some time for a hospital bed to become available. Until then, patients may be cared for in the ER.

North Cypress has two additional Emergency Rooms that are located off of the main hospital campus - Willowbrook Campus and Fry Road Campus. If a patient requires admission, transport by ambulance to the main hospital which is mandated by regulatory agencies, will be arranged at no additional expense to the patient.

STEP 5: Going Home/Discharge
Patients who are treated and discharged are provided with aftercare instructions and if necessary, prescriptions for medications or additional tests. It is very important that patients follow up with their primary care physician. Please make certain that you have any medical paperwork required for work, school or other purposes.
